Key Stage 3

Core PE consists of 2 hours per week where we offer a balanced and varied programme of study along National Curriculum guidelines. During key stage 3, pupils become more expert in their skills and techniques, and learn how to apply them in different activities. They start to understand what makes an effective performance and how to apply these principles to their own and others' work. They learn to take the initiative and make decisions for themselves about what to do to improve performance and start to identify the types of activity they prefer, and take a variety of roles, such as leader and official.

Key Stage 4

Long JumpCore PE consists of 2 hours per week, continuing to offer a variety of activities to suit the individual. During key stage 4, pupils tackle complex and demanding activities, applying their knowledge of skills, techniques and effective performance. They decide whether to get involved in physical activity that is mainly focused on competing or performing, on promoting health and wellbeing, or on developing personal fitness. They also decide on which roles suit them best including performer, coach, choreographer, leader and official.

The view they have of their skilfulness and physical competence gives them the confidence to get involved in exercise and activity out of school and in later life. In addition to core PE we offer both GCSE Physical Education and Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport at Rossett School.

Key Stage 5

At Rossett School we offer both AS and A2 in Physical Education. AS candidates study the following: Application of Anatomical and Physiological Knowledge to Improve Performance; Acquiring and Performing Movement skills; and Contemporary Studies in Physical Education.

A2 candidates study Exercise and Sport Physiology: the response of the body to performance
and training; and two options. The options are: Historical Studies in Physical Education; Comparative Studies in Physical Education; Biomechanical Analysis of Human Movement; Psychology of Sport Performance.

Outdoor Pursuits

ClimbingThe Sports Faculty now includes the school's Outdoor Pursuits specialist.  This has broadened the areas of activity to include residential activities and expedition work as well as providing an option in KS3 &  4 and within the GCSE PE, BTEC first, A Level PE and BTEC National programmes. Outdoor Education is highly regarded here at Rossett School. The benefits of taking part in adventurous activities are recognised and promoted. Outdoor Education is available as an elective course in Y10 & Y11, as well as being available as part of the PE timetable.

For all students a number of residential trips are available. Each spring a trip runs for approximately 90 Y7 students to Bewerley Park, in Nidderdale. Further up the school smaller trips to Humphrey Head in the south Lakes are also available.

Extra–curricular opportunities include Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold level activities which extend students’ expertise and provide physical challenges which assess our young peoples’ skills and provide a good test of character. Rossett is also fortunate to have a Climbing Wall to use which has played a major part in the success in recent years of the school climbing team in competitions, having won the Leeds Wall Climbing Competition six out of the last seven years.
