English Faculty

As an English department, we pride ourselves on the breadth of literature that our students study. We also encourage our students to read independently. Through a wide range of activities, our students produce a variety of exciting and imaginative texts and learn how our language has evolved and continues to change.

Within the English department, teachers are encouraged to use drama as a means of accessing texts and wider issues. There are opportunities within English to use ICT to enhance their learning through research and interactive programmes.

Key Stage Three

At Key Stage Three our schemes of learning have been carefully developed to include fiction, drama, poetry and media. We work closely within the framework of the Literacy Strategy to ensure full coverage of the objectives for reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Key Stage Four

At GCSE, we follow the AQA specification A syllabus which covers a wide range of texts and language skills.

Students attend a ‘Poetry Live!’ event, which this year is held on 21st November. This gives them the opportunity to see performances from poets from the Anthology studied during GCSE.

Links

The English department would like to promote the cool reads website which allows students to access a wide range of reading recommendations from their peers. They can also add their own reviews.
