Achieving excellence and Aiming High

High academic standards rely on our ‘triangle of care’ between students, teachers and parents. Our excellent examination results show that we have hard-working students who receive highly skilled teaching from dedicated staff, with positive support from parents.

We expect all our students to work to the best of their ability in class and when doing homework. We monitor this very carefully and we will contact you as soon as we feel you can help us with this. In order to create and encourage a good working environment we also have high expectations of our young people with regards to conduct and appearance. Our Code of Conduct is based on respect for oneself and for others and we have a school uniform which is smart, practical and accessible.

There are a number of initiatives to encourage a sense of responsibility. Students are involved in the future development and organisation of the school through the whole school Student Council which meets regularly with senior staff. In addition, each year group is involved in hugely successful fundraising initiatives which have seen us raise over £30,000 in 2007/8. Our PTA is also very active at Rossett and we hope that all parents will get involved in the PTA's activities.

How we care

We are really proud of our purpose built Junior Block a unique centre for new Year 7 students. It provides a secure base for tutorial work and pastoral care and gives new students an immediate sense of belonging.

To ease transition we have developed an excellent and effective liaison programme with all our feeder schools. This has been enhanced recently, with a Gifted and Talented programme which has seen Year 6 students taking part in exciting learning experiences such as survival techniques, making a newspaper, web design and mathematical puzzles.

The Head of Year 7 visits all of our feeder schools in the summer term to talk to our new students and to make sure we understand their needs. On entry each student joins a mixed ability tutor group of about 30 with a form tutor who usually stays with them throughout their time at Rossett. As the key individual for
parents and child, the tutor sees students each day, gets to know each of them well, helps with problems
and worries and monitors their progress through the school.

Listeners

In addition Sixth Form ‘Listeners’, specially trained mentors, are attached to each tutor group and are an
essential part of the settling in and support process throughout Year 7 and 8.
